Alter Eco Dark Chocolate Quinoa Bar
Is it me or is quinoa showing up EVERYWHERE? It’s like the Quinoa coalition, if such a thing exists, decided it was high time to make quinoa happen, and you better get with the program… or else.
I was a late-comer to the quinoa fanaticism, and I can’t really say that I’m like so gaga for quinoa that I go out of my way for it, but I can respect the ancient grain and I actually enjoy it. For those who haven’t tried it yet, quinoa has a strong flavor. It’s not off-putting or overtly earthy like buckwheat can be, but it’s definitely assertive and if you’re looking to incorporate it into a dish, you need to balance the flavors with others that are equally as strong.
I wasn’t thinking much of quinoa during a recent visit to Whole Foods, but I sure as hell was thinking about chocolate. I’m pretty much always thinking about chocolate, but that’s beside the point. Anyway, I was wandering around the hippy mega-mart looking for something sweet when a bar of Alter Eco chocolate caught my eye, touting QUINOA on the packaging. My first thought was WTF? Quinoa and chocolate? That can’t taste good, there’s no way. I picked up the bar and examined it like some sort of circus curiosity and then immediately placed it in my basket. I mean why not right?
I finally tore into the chocolate later that night and I don’t know what I was expecting, but the chocolate bar exceeded any expectations I might have been secretly keeping. The chocolate is dark, which I love, and the quinoa is totally mellow. I mean it does not get more mellow than this. They somehow transformed it into a puffed rice kind of consistency, with a completely neutral flavor. The whole chocolate bar reminded me of a Nestle Crunch bar, which I used to love back in the day.
I ended up buying it again a week later (and many times since). Anything that can get me to repeat a purchase in that short of a time frame, is a winner in my book!
