The Amazing Deli & Gluten-Free Factory

Some of my fondest food memories are at delis. Growing up in the city, deli's had everything you needed, from sandwiches to Advil and everything in between. There was one deli that I particularly loved because they had this amazing warm grilled chicken sandwich smothered in white cheese and honey mustard. Thinking about it now has me craving it hardcore.

It's been years since I've been to a deli. They stubbornly remain true to their roots and rarely offer anything gluten-free, until now.

I came across a gluten-free deli in Stamford, CT and immediately had to check it out. That Awesome Deli & The Gluten-Free Food Factory looks like a regular deli from the outside, but once you walk in, it's a world of gluten-free goodness. The deli offers both gluten and gluten-free food, which is nice for me since Mr. misterbelly loves his gluten.

After chatting with the owner, we found out why he decided to offer gluten-free food. About 20 years ago he met his future wife while he was working at a restaurant. She came in and wanted to know if they could make anything gluten-free for her. At that time, gluten-freedom was not something that was well known at all. He didn't know what gluten-free meant, but was so taken with her that he told her to come back and he set to work on learning about the diet. The next time she walked in, he made her a gluten-free meal and the rest was history.

The couple work together to provide your standard deli options for gluten-free eaters, like sandwiches, but also offer gluten-free prepared meals that you can take home and warm up like veggie lasagna and chicken marsala. The sandwiches are great because the bread is made from a proprietary flour blend they have perfected over time. It's delicious by the way. I also enjoyed one of the gluten-free chocolate chip cookies baked fresh at the restaurant.

The best part about this deli is that while they do offer non gluten-free items for patrons who don't have a gluten restriction, the prep area is entirely separate from the gluten-free prep area. Yup, you read that right; they have a dedicated gluten-free prep area for sandwiches. Separate utensils, cutting boards, sinks, everything. The owner changed his gloves in between making my sandwich and my husband's to avoid any cross-contamination. That level of detail and awareness is what truly makes That Awesome Deli & The Gluten-Free Food Factory so awesome.

What kinds of gluten-free options would you like to see a deli offer?
