For anyone who wondered what happened to Arico Foods, wonder no more. A few months ago they re-launched their brand as Crisproot, changing everything from the packaging down to the actual chips themselves. I was a big fan of their chips before and have been curious about the updated version since they came out.
The new cassava chips are ridged and come in four flavors: Original, Sea Salt, Thai Ginger and BBQ Bliss. I wasn't sure what to expect from a ridged cassava chip, but was pleasantly surprised when I taste-tested some of the flavors sent to me by Crisproot. I normally dread doing taste tests because I feel like I need to hit the gym for 5 hours afterward to burn off the extra calories, but what I like about the Crisproot chips is that they have 30% less fat than regular chips, so you don't have to feel super guilty if you eat one too many.
The chips are now much thicker than they used to be, and the ridges give it more of a heartier mouthfeel. The flavors are subtle overall, but not so much that you can't actually taste anything. I'm personally a fan of the BBQ Bliss flavor. The BBQ flavor works really well with the ridges and makes the chip taste very close to a regular potato chip. The Thai Ginger flavor is also interesting, if only because I've never had a ginger chip before. It's definitely the more adult oriented flavor of the group as I can't picture many little ones out there begging mommy or daddy for ONE MORE GINGER CHIP, but you know, there are adventurous tots out there so I can't rule it out completely. The ginger flavor is mellow and is married with what seems like lemongrass and a couple of other spices I can't pinpoint. If you're a ginger fan, you will definitely like these and you can put them out at a party and feel like a mature adult.
For the purists out there, the original flavor is naked cassava and for those that like just a hint of flavor, the sea salt is right up your alley, with just a dash of salt. I haven't started seeing Crisproot in stores until recently, and only at my local Fairway. If you can't find them yet, just hang tight and you might see them soon at your local Whole Foods or natural foods store. If you're impatient (like me), you can try them now...well almost. I'm giving away a box with full-size bags of all four flavors, perfect to have on hand for the upcoming holidays.
