Impulse buys. Sometimes they can go terribly wrong and sometimes, just sometimes, you'll find something that you truly love. The other day, while waiting in line at Whole Foods wishing the person in front of me would hurry up, I looked at a display of energy bars that was next to me. I usually don't bother looking at energy bars because not many are gluten free and the ones that are don't usually taste good. I was a big fan of those Kind bars that Starbucks is substituting for Valencia Orange cakes now, but I got tired of them after a while because they can be a little too sweet. Which is why I was pleasantly surprised to discover the NuGo Free Gluten Free Trail Mix bars. I bought one and only one because I'm a skeptic and didn't want to buy a bunch and be horribly disappointed.
I put it in my purse and didn't think about it until I got to work the next day. I was ravenous and decided to see if A) it tasted good and B) would give me "energy" and quiet that crazy hungry monster that takes control of me every morning around 10 AM.
I bit into it expecting it to be bitter or chalky and it was neither of those things. In fact, it was really good! It kind of reminded me of a healthy version of a Whatchamacalit. Rice crisps, chocolate, fruit, nuts and a hint of sweetness. It didn't have any of that overtly sweet taste that Kind bars can have and the nuts weren't overbearing in flavor as can be the case in a lot of nut based energy bars. I had to stop myself from eating the whole thing so I could take a picture of it! These are definitely getting added to my snack rotation at work.
