I just got back from an awesome trip to San Francisco and I have lots and lots of goodies to post over the next few days. Aside from being one of the most beautiful cities in the world, San Francisco is also full of amazing culinary adventures. I only scratched the surface while I was there, but I can't wait to go back and explore again.
One of my prized finds during my trip was in Santa Cruz, CA. We took a day trip there to check out the town and do some hiking. I was craving ice cream and my husband suggested stopping at a small organic food shop called The Food Bin. He used to live in Santa Cruz and figured I could find something there to suit my dairy/gluten free needs and he was right. I was staring at the freezer section when I saw this brand of ice cream called Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss. I picked it up to check it out and it was not only dairy free, but gluten free as well! It was made with only 4 ingredients: Coconut Milk, Agave Syrup, Chocolate and Vanilla - all organic I might add. I'm pretty skeptical when it comes to specialty foods because sometimes they just don't taste that great. I asked my husband if he thought it would taste good when a random girl walking by said "It is absolutely amazing. It is the best vegan ice cream out there." How could I turn down such a glowing recommendation?
She was right. The ice cream is phenomenal, and trust me I don't say that about many things. It tastes just like regular ice cream, same texture and everything. The only thing that was different about it was the faint taste of coconut, which I loved. It didn't leave any weird film in your mouth like soy ice creams do and the consistency was exactly like regular ice cream. I was absolutely floored. I ate about half a pint in the car ride home and I was sad that I didn't have a freezer in the hotel room to keep it overnight.
The one downside is that they only distribute their products on the West coast at the moment, but I think if they receive enough emails then they might consider expanding their territory. I highly recommend trying this ice cream if you live on the West coast or if you are taking a trip out there. It really is Coconut Bliss.
*Update: I emailed the company and it seems as though Coconut Bliss products will be available on the East coast starting in Spring 2009. Yay!
